    con·vec·tion
    Pronunciation: k&n-'vek-sh&n
    Function: noun
Etymology: Late Latin convection-, convectio, from Latin convehere to bring together, from com- + vehere to carry -- more at WAY
1 : the action or process of conveying
2 a : the circulatory motion that occurs in a fluid at a nonuniform temperature owing to the variation of its density and the action of gravity b : the transfer of heat by convection -- compare CONDUCTION, RADIATION

Convection is the internal movement of currents within fluids (i.e. liquids and gases). It cannot occur in solids due to the atoms not being able to flow freely. The most common cause of internal movement is a variation in density due to a transfer of heat (This type is sometimes referred to as "natural heat convection" to distinguish it from forced heat convection where transfer of heat due to movement in the fluid from forces other than heat-induced buoyancy forces). Other sources of density variations, such as variable composition (for example, salinity), or from the application of an external motive force are also often causes. Current movement may be invisibly slow, or it may be as fast as a tornado or twister. Convection occurs in atmospheres, oceans, and planetary mantles.

In the case of Earth's atmosphere, solar radiation heats the Earth's surface, and this heat is then transferred to the atmosphere by processes that are mostly convective. When a layer of air receives contact or radiative heat from the Earth's surface, it expands, becomes less dense and is pushed upward by buoyancy, carrying the heat energy upward with it. Colder, heavier air sinks under it and is then warmed, expands, and rises. The warm rising air cools as it reaches the higher, cooler regions of the atmosphere and becomes denser. Since it cannot sink through the rising air beneath it, it moves laterally and then begins to sink. When it reaches the surface again it is heated, and is drawn back into the original rising column. These convection currents cause local breezes, winds, thermals, cyclones and thunderstorms, and at a larger scale, produce the global atmospheric circulation features.

    2) "Toaster" -- As to convection toaster

    Pronunciation: 'tO-st&r
    Function: noun
: one that toasts; especially : an electrical appliance for toasting

    A classicly-styled chrome two-slot toaster

A toaster is a small electric kitchen appliance designed to toast bread, an act also known as 'making toast.' Prior to the development of the electric toaster, bread was sometimes toasted by placing it in a metal frame and holding it over a fire.

    A typical modern 2-slice toaster operates on anywhere between 600 and 1200 W and makes toast in 1 to 3 minutes. A 1000-watt toaster running for 2 minutes uses 1000×120 watt-seconds = 120 kJ (0.033 kW·h).

    Toaster with light-fitting plug ca.1909.

Modern toasters are typically one of three varieties: pop-up toasters, toaster ovens and conveyor toasters.

In pop-up toasters, the bread is inserted vertically into slots (generally only large enough to admit a single slice of bread) on the top of the toaster. A lever on the side of the toaster is depressed, activating the toaster. When an internal device determines that the toasting cycle is complete, the toaster turns off and the toast pops up out of the slots. The heating elements of a pop-up toaster are oriented vertically, parallel to the bread.

By comparison, toaster ovens are small electric ovens with a door on one side and a tray within. They were invented by John Goodman. To toast bread with a toaster oven, one lays down slices of bread horizontally on the tray, closes the door, and activates the toaster, usually by means of a lever. When the toast is done, the toaster turns off, but the door must be opened manually. Toaster ovens are capable of performing most of the functions of ordinary ovens, but on a much smaller scale.

Conveyer toasters are designed to make many slices of toast and are generally used in the catering industry, being ..."
